Does the Church Matter? (past)

Date: Tuesday, August 29
Time: 11:30 a.m.
Location: ACU’s Hunter Welcome Center
Cost: $15 (register by Aug. 22)

Join fellow Abilene-area ministers to tackle an important question facing 21st-century congregational leaders: “Does the church matter?” (Spoiler alert: we think she does!)

At this upcoming minister’s luinch, Randy Harris will offer his insights and perspectives on the ever-changing attitudes toward the church in a world and at a time when the church and ministers do not hold the highest spots on the go-to list for addressing moral and spiritual decisions. When young people and some not-so-young people are parting ways with the church in record numbers, church leaders are challenged with questions about the church’s importance.

Randy Harris is ACU Bible instructor as well as spiritual director for the College of Biblical Studies and the Siburt Institute for Church Ministry.

Register today for the session at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, in ACU’s Hunter Welcome Center. Ministers, church staff, and elders are invited to participate. The cost is $15 per person, and the deadline is Aug. 22.

The mission of the Siburt Institute for Church Ministry is to offer resources and best practices for leading congregational communities in pursuit of God’s mission the world and to provide avenues for the spiritual formation of Christian leaders. In doing so, the institute promotes constructive and collaborative relationships between churches and Abilene Christian University. The Church portion of the CHARIS site is one of the Siburt Institute’s many resources.

CHARIS hosts conversations of and about Churches of Christ. The website is intended to support education for Christian life and community through contemporary discussions and historical sources that variously witness to the gifts (“charis”) of God among Churches of Christ, especially their plea for visible unity among Christians through ongoing renewal and restoration of Scriptural beliefs and practices among God’s people.

The CHARIS website is supported by Abilene Christian University (Abilene, TX, USA), the Center for Heritage and Renewal in Spirituality (CHARIS) at ACU. The purpose of CHARIS at ACU is to seek God’s blessings for a healthy relationship between the Christian college/university – its faculty, staff, and students – and the church heritage that gives identity and meaning to such a school. This underlying concern for Christian colleges/universities, and their relationship to the churches, is reflected in the form and content of the CHARIS website.
